This article presents a review study of radially-radiant thin-film spherulites, which are unusual crystalline structures that remain virtually unexplored. These structures were studied in practically significant thin-film ferroelectric solid solutions of lead zirconate titanate, produced by a two-stage method of RF magnetron sputtering on silicon and glass-ceramic substrates. Scanning electron microscopy, piezoresponse force microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and dielectric spectroscopy were used to study the films. The study discovered effects of radially oriented lateral polarization and electron channeling. The article provides explanations for the observed effects and estimates the contributions of various physical mechanisms to the magnitude of the lateral polarization.
