Introduction. Preserving the historical memory of the Great Patriotic War includes studying the biographies of front-line soldiers and defenders of Leningrad during the enemy siege. Among the war heroes were teachers from Herzen Leningrad Pedagogical Institute (today Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia). This article focuses on the lives of teachers from the Pedagogy Department of Herzen Leningrad Pedagogical Institute who served in the Great Patriotic War. The study highlights previously unknown aspects of the lives and military service of Alexander Matveevich Buyanov (1902–1971) and Nina Alekseevna Lukyanova (1921–?). Materials and Methods. The authors employ historical-genetic and biographical methods, enabling an understanding of aspects of the Great Patriotic War through the biographies of teachers from Herzen Leningrad Pedagogical Institute. The research is based on documents from the state archives of St. Petersburg, materials from the museum and archive collections of Herzen State Pedagogical University of Russia, and the siege-time diary of A. M. Buyanov. For some sources, this article represents their first mention in scholarly literature. Results. Analysis of the documents revealed new facts about individuals’ life and the functioning of higher education institutions in besieged Leningrad in 1941–1942, as well as about women’s participation in hostilities during the Great Patriotic War. The study uncovered previously unknown details of the biographies of A. M. Buyanov and N. A. Lukyanova, both teachers of the Pedagogy Department. The new evidence of their heroism, along with the materials on their participation in the struggle for Victory, provides a fuller understanding of the scale of the war tragedy and the role of teachers and women during the Siege of Leningrad and the Great Patriotic War. Conclusion. The facts provided in the article will be useful for further study on teachers’ participation in the Great Patriotic War. The findings may also be used in patriotic education and in local history research work with young people, particularly those focusing on the Siege of Leningrad and the lives and heroism of teachers from Herzen Leningrad Pedagogical Institute.
