This article provides a science-popular overview of current knowledge regarding a distinctive class of chemical compounds — cyclopropanes, including nitrocyclopropanes — which are the focus of fundamental research funded by an internal grant of Herzen University. The study describes the outcomes of the grant project, with an emphasis on the structural features and properties of original representatives within this class of compounds, specifically trichloromethyl-substituted nitrocyclopropanes. The article provides a general assessment of their potentially significant practical properties and discusses the main approaches to their synthesis. Special attention is paid to the research opportunities afforded to the faculty and students by Herzen University through its internal grant program.
